About this event: The Second Performance Review of the GCF seeks to inform updates to the GCF strategic plan. In this joint event, the GCF Secretariat and Independent Evaluation Unit will present emerging findings from the Second Performance Review and discuss progress over GCF-1. The event, co-hosted with the GCF-Secretariat, will allow participate to engage and reflect on the emerging recommendations for GCF-2.
Where: GCF-GEF Pavilion
About this event: The GCF supports funding efforts through various modalities. This event will highlight key findings from evaluations on GCF access modalities, including the Request for Proposals (RFP), the Simplified Approval Process (SAP), and Direct Access modalities. It will also look at the effectiveness of the GCF’s approach to Private Sector and Country Ownership and highlight experiences from other MDBs.

Where: Zambia Pavilion
About this event: The Green Climate Fund (GCF) is mandated to provide simplified and improved access to funding, including direct access, basing its activities on a country-driven approach. In its Updated Strategic Plan for 2020-2023, the GCF also sets out to deliver significantly increased funding channelled through direct access entities (DAEs) relative to its Initial Resource Mobilization programming period. Direct access is one of the distinctive features of GCF, designed to support developing countries in integrating climate change funding with national climate action plans. This panel is convened by the Independent Evaluation Unit (IEU) of the GCF. The IEU is undertaking an Independent Synthesis of Direct Access in the Green Climate Fund, which will inform the discussion along with previous evaluations. The panel will include representatives of DAEs, NDAs, and the GCF-IEU will also invite partner organizations and representatives from CSO/PSOs to share their relevant experiences and insights.
Where: GCF-GEF Pavilion
About this event: African States, Small Island Developing States (SIDS), and Least Developed Countries (LDCs) are countries for which the stakes could not be higher when it comes to climate change. This event will share learnings from evaluations on the vulnerable countries’ experiences when accessing the GCF resources for their climate priorities.

Co-hosted with South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI)

About this event: Investments in adaptation, nature-based solutions and ecosystem services are of keen interest to the climate community. The Independent Evaluation Unit (IEU) of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) recently conducted an Independent Evaluation of the GCF’s Adaptation Portfolio and Approach as well as an Independent Evaluation of the GCF’s investments in vulnerable countries such as African states, small island developing States (SIDS) and least developed countries (LDCs), which looks at what it takes for the GCF – a young, large and ambitious climate fund – to contribute to adaptation interventions with scale, depth and duration in developing countries as well as the needs of vulnerable countries. The role of adaptation is also of interest to other institutions, such as the Independent Evaluation Department (IED) of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Commonwealth Secretariat, European Investment Bank (EIB) and German Institute for Development Evaluation (DEval), who also have ongoing work relating to climate change adaptation and/or climate investments. The event will thus provide an opportunity for the audience to hear about the recent learnings from these organizations’ work on climate change adaptation and investments.
Where: Korea Pavilion
About this event: In this event, the GCF-IEU will share some of its learnings from the three evaluations, looking specifically at the vulnerable countries’ experiences when accessing the GCF resources for their climate priorities. Some partner organizations of the GCF-IEU will also share their own learnings based on their experience of having worked with/supported some of the SIDS, LDCs, and/or African states themselves, and/or comment on the usefulness of the GCF-IEU’s evaluation findings.
Where: Korea Pavilion
About this event: The IEU conducts periodic evaluations of the performance of the Green Climate Fund in order to provide an objective assessment of the results of the Fund, including its funded activities and its effectiveness and efficiency. In this event, the GCF-IEU will present emerging findings from the GCF’s Second Performance Review. And will engage with GCF Secretariat members, GCF Board and the audience in an interactive panel discussion. The Review is aimed at informing the update of the GCF’s Strategic Plan for the coming period.

In November 2022, Egypt will host the 27th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP27) in Sharm El-Sheikh, with a view to building on previous successes and paving the way for future ambition. A golden opportunity for all stakeholders to rise to the occasion and tackle effectively the global challenge of climate change facilitated by Egypt on the African continent.
