LEARNING PAPER
How do we deal with the increase in uncertainty and unpredictability in complex systems, in the context of climate mitigation and adaptation projects? This paper introduces and discusses a diagnostic tool to map the interaction between the project/investment and the social–ecological system, as well as a complexity rating system: these tools can guide the theory of change, design, management and evaluation of projects by identifying and tracing project components that contribute to non-linear and sudden changes.

This paper is authored by Dr. Karoline Wiesner from the University of Bristol School of Mathematics, Dr. Jyotsna Puri from IFAD and the IEU’s Andreas Reumann
STAFF NEWS
Sadly, the IEU said goodbye to our colleague Nayeon Kim, Research Assistant Consultant, who will be moving on to a new career opportunity.
It still feels like a few months ago that I joined IEU. Two years have passed since then, and I leave the unit with countless fond memories. I have met and worked with amazing colleagues and friends from whom I have learned so much. I will miss everyone dearly and hope to stay in touch. As difficult it is to say goodbye, as commonly told in Korean, “인연은 어디든 다시 만난다 (People destined to have met will meet again, possibly in a different time and place),” I look forward to the day our paths will cross again.
THE EVALUATOR

Does crop insurance improve farmers’ livelihoods in the face of climate change? If so, what does it take to convince them to buy it?

In this episode, Dr. Nathanial Peterson from the Busara Center for Behavioral Economics explains how Busara helped an agricultural insuretech improve the sale of crop insurance through a mixed-incentive referral system.

"The fight against climate change needs a collaborative effort from multidisciplinary specialists, including Machine Learning practitioners, to lend their expertise in this race against time - a race that we cannot afford to lose."

In a new blog, IEU's Hellen Nassuna illustrates the potential of applying machine learning to climate action and assessment. Read more!
IEU VIRTUAL TALK

Last month's Virtual Talk featured Dr. Tulika Narayan and Dr. Faraz Usmani from Mathematica as speakers, and IEU's Dr. Martin Prowse as a discussant.

This Virtual Talk presented the results of the IEU's recently concluded "Evidence Review on Results-Based Payments: Evidence Gap Map and Intervention Heat Map", which focuses on the global effectiveness of RBPs. The speakers talked about the lessons learned from a wider range of sectors and insights as to how the application of results-based approaches can be enhanced. Click here to watch the recording!
📅 In celebration of Women's History Month, this month's IEU Virtual Talk will focus on the topic of women in carbon markets. Make sure to mark your calendar for Thursday, March 25!

And be on the look-out for something special from the IEU on International Women's Day, March 8!
