The Independent Evaluation Unit honours refugees around the globe and calls attention to the increasingly urgent issue of climate refugees in a new video. By altering weather patterns and causing environmental disruptions, climate change contributes increasingly to the displacement of vulnerable populations across the globe.

Certain countries like least developed countries (LDCs), landlocked developing countries (LLDCs), and small island developing states (SIDS) are particularly vulnerable to climate change. Least developed countries and landlocked developing countries face shifting weather patterns, including droughts that threaten water resources and agriculture. Small island developing states face rising sea levels that pose existential risks to property and livelihoods.

The IEU's upcoming evaluations on investments in the SIDS and Adaptation examine how well the GCF addresses the needs of, particularly vulnerable communities. Climate migration and social aspects are key themes in these evaluations.

World Refugee Day is an international day designated by the United Nations. It falls each year on Saturday, June 20 and celebrates the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution. World Refugee Day is an occasion to build empathy and understanding for their plight and to recognize their resilience in rebuilding their lives.
